About the Walter Lawrence Scholars Initiative
The Walter Lawrence Scholars Initiative (WLSI) offers exposure to career pathways for diverse populations interested in scientific writing and science communication. Interns will gain an understanding of related opportunities within the field of biomedical research.
Qualified applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, be intellectually curious, team orientated, and have an interest in oncology-related careers and health disparities. Interns will also learn about the program's namesake, Walter Lawrence Jr., M.D., the first director of Massey, and the qualities of humanity and medical excellence he shared with patients and colleagues.
Internship details
The WLSI is open to students who have completed qualifying exams at the Ph.D. level and postdoctoral trainees with an interest in scientific writing and science communications. Features of the internship include:
- Six-week, remote learning experience (first five weeks remote, last week in person) from June 3 - July 12, 2024 with a commitment of 30 internship hours per week, daily 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. EST
- Development of a foundational understanding of scientific writing careers including grant writing, manuscript writing, public relations communications and clinical trial protocol writing
- Mentored experiences with Massey experts and portfolio development opportunities
- Invitations to participate in Massey-led events throughout the year to enhance professional and personal development
Stipend award
Interns will receive a stipend of $4,700.
All VCU-affiliated candidates who receive funding from VCU cannot participate in WLSI without approval from their academic advisor and/or program director.
Application process and eligibility
The WLSI is now accepting applications from students that have completed qualifying exams at the Ph.D. level and postdoctoral trainees. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and an interest in cancer science.

- Application review dates: February 1 – April 7, 2024
- Applicant interviews/selections: April 10 – April 14, 2024

Q: The website says this internship is 30-hours per week, does it have specific hours?
A: All scholars are required to be available from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. EST.
Q: 30-hours a week seems flexible, can I work another job during the internship?
A: In short, no. Scholars will have hours where they are participating in virtual instruction, but it also requires collaboration with peers and administrators. Maintaining multiple jobs would be nearly impossible.
Q: Will there be any in-person meetings or requirements?
A: Yes, the last week of the internship will be in person at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Q: I am currently working on my postdoc/in medical school and hoping to go into medicine/academia. Can I pursue this internship?
A: This program is designed for individuals who hope to pursue careers as scientific writers and not careers in academia/in academic medicine.
